A wonderfully unusual and highly decorative vintage sculptural gorilla head side table, dating from circa 1970s–1980s.
The striking gorilla form is constructed with stretched leather moulded over a solid form, creating the wonderfully expressive features of the face. The dark brown-black leather has been carefully worked around the pronounced brow, deep-set eyes, cheeks and muzzle, giving the piece an almost sculptural quality.
The leather has developed a rich and characterful patina with age, with areas of rubbing, tonal variation and surface wear adding to its wonderfully individual appearance.
The flattened circular top allows the piece to function as an occasional or drinks table, while its extraordinary form makes it equally successful simply as a piece of decorative sculpture.
A fabulous and eccentric piece of vintage design – highly unusual, beautifully tactile and a genuine talking point in an interior.
