A fine mid-19th century English Davenport desk in beautifully figured rosewood, dating to circa 1860.

This is a particularly elegant example, showcasing exceptional timber selection throughout, with rich, dramatic grain visible across the panels, drawer fronts and top. The proportions are compact yet substantial, making it both highly practical and visually striking.

The desk features a gilt-tooled leather writing slope, framed within a rosewood border, opening to reveal a fitted interior with small drawers and pigeonholes. To the side sits a bank of four graduated drawers with turned wooden knobs, with corresponding faux drawers to the opposing side — a classic Davenport design detail.

The top is finished with a raised gallery, while the front panel is beautifully shaped and framed with subtle carved detailing. The piece stands on turned feet and retains a wonderful depth of colour and patina throughout.

A highly usable antique — ideal as a writing desk, bedside piece, or statement addition to a sitting room.
