A charming and unusual late Victorian cast iron “Door Bell” advertising display, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.
Beautifully cast in the form of a traditional hand bell, this substantial piece retains its original black painted finish with gilt-highlighted mouldings and hand-painted white lettering reading “DOOR BELL”. The reverse is painted “TED”, likely an old owner’s or retailer’s inscription acquired during its working life.
Originally intended as a counter-top display or trade sign for an ironmonger’s or hardware merchant, it is a wonderful example of Victorian commercial advertising and makes a striking decorative object today.
With its sculptural form, original painted finish and pleasing patina, it would make an excellent addition to a collection of architectural antiques, shop displays or country house interiors. Comparable antique ironmongery and Victorian shop fittings continue to be sought after by collectors.
