A striking mid-20th-century oil on canvas depicting a turbulent open sea beneath a pale, softly worked sky.
Painted with vigorous, heavily textured brushwork and areas of impasto, the composition has a wonderfully expressive quality, with deep teal and blue-green waves broken by flashes of white foam and subtle pink and mauve tones.
Signed lower right, the signature appears to read “Suchowski” or “Sulkowski”, and is dated 1944 beneath.
There is also a faint pencil inscription to the reverse which appears to include “Liverpool”. Given the subject matter and this inscription, the painting may depict the Irish Sea, although the exact location has not been confirmed.
Presented in a handsome carved wooden frame with a gilt inner slip, which complements the strong colours of the painting beautifully.
An atmospheric and highly decorative original work with an interesting wartime date and possible Liverpool connection.
