Produced by Shreve & Co. of San Francisco in the early 20th century, this large sterling silver gallery tray exemplifies the Art Nouveau style. It features a mahogany base with a detailed inlaid design at the center, protected by its original 4mm thick glass overlay with minor, hardly noticeable imperfections. The substantial 2.5-inch sterling silver gallery rim showcases a flowing, decorative motif characteristic of the era.
Founded in 1852, Shreve & Co. earned a reputation as one of America’s finest silversmiths, with their works collected by presidents and prominent families. Notable for luxury craftsmanship, the company also became a premier Patek Philippe retailer in 1887. This tray bears the hallmark “Shreve & Co-Sterling,” indicative of their early 20th-century silverwork before they included “San Francisco” in their mark.
A remarkable piece of American craftsmanship, this tray is a testament to Shreve & Co.’s legacy in fine silver design.
