A striking and unusually large studio pottery charger by the British ceramic artist Ralph Jandrell, dating from around the turn of the 21st century.
Of substantial circular form, the charger is decorated with an atmospheric woodland landscape, the composition formed from tall, sinuous trees enclosing a pathway or clearing beyond. Jandrell has worked the surface in a restrained palette of earthy browns, olive greens, soft blues and cream, giving the scene an appealingly painterly, almost watercolour-like quality.
The broad outer border is particularly effective, with richly mottled brown, ochre and russet tones providing a strong frame for the lighter woodland scene at its centre. The combination of freely applied decoration and the considerable scale gives the piece a strong sculptural presence.
Jandrell is a British studio potter known particularly for his hand-thrown and individually decorated ceramics inspired by the natural landscape. At 50 cm diameter, this is an especially impressive example of his work and functions equally well as a large table centrepiece or as a decorative wall-mounted charger.
