A charming original work by Percy Robertson (1868–1934) depicting Overy Mill, Dorchester, finely worked in pencil and wash with Robertson’s characteristic delicate architectural and landscape detail.
The composition shows the historic mill beside the water, with the buildings, trees and riverbank rendered in a particularly attractive, light-handed manner. The work is initialled “PR” lower right and titled “Overy Mill” beneath the image.
Of particular interest is the excellent provenance retained on the reverse. The picture bears a J. S. Maas & Co Ltd exhibition label recording its inclusion in:
“The Thames Seventy Years Ago – Exhibition of water-colours by Percy Robertson (1868–1934), 3rd–21st June 1974”
where it was catalogued as No. 32, Overy Mill, Dorchester.
Also retaining a label for J. C. Farley & Co, Fine Art Picture Frame Makers and Gilders, London WC1.
Presented behind glass with a multi-line mount in a slim gilt frame.

Condition:
The artwork itself presents well, with some gentle age-related toning consistent with its age. The mount has some visible staining and discolouration, particularly towards the lower edge. The gilt frame has areas of rubbing, surface wear and small losses to the finish, as photographed. The original exhibition and framers’ labels remain attached to the reverse.
A very appealing and well-provenanced example of Robertson’s work, with particularly good documented exhibition history.
