A handsome pair of late Victorian or early C20th picture frames, later adapted as mirrors. The frames are veneered in richly figured mahogany (or possibly amboyna-toned birch), finished in a deep reddish-brown polish with a fine bevelled inner slip in black. The corners show evidence of hand-joining, and the varnish has developed a pleasing, authentic patina consistent with age.
A surviving maker’s label on the reverse reads:
“J. H. Welsh, Picture Frame Manufacturer and Fancy Goods Dealer… Established 1870.”
This London-based firm was active in the late 19th and early 20th century, giving a date range of c.1880–1910 for the frames themselves.
