A handsome pair of late 19th / early 20th century French bedside cabinets (chevets) in the Louis XV taste, crafted in beautifully figured walnut veneer and topped with dark grey Belgian Sainte-Anne marble, characterised by its deep charcoal tone and delicate white veining. Each cabinet features a single drawer above a cupboard door and stands on elegant carved cabriole legs with a shaped apron. The doors are veneered in richly figured walnut panels displaying dramatic natural grain typical of provincial Rhône Valley furniture of this period. The interiors retain their original shaped shelf designed to hold a chamber pot, a charming reminder of their original function in French bedrooms before indoor plumbing became widespread. Drawers are traditionally constructed with dovetail joints and the cabinets retain their original brass drop handles. The dark Belgian marble tops are inset into the frames and provide both a practical and elegant surface, beautifully complementing the warmth of the walnut. These cabinets make excellent bedside tables but would also work equally well as lamp tables or small hall cabinets in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
