A striking pair of mid-20th-century ceramic table lamps, of substantial baluster form and displaying a strong Chinese decorative influence.

Each lamp has a rich warm terracotta/orange glazed ground, finely decorated in contrasting white with stylised flowering plants, scrolling foliage and traditional geometric borders. The decoration incorporates key-fret and cloud motifs, together with auspicious-looking Chinese-style symbols arranged around the neck and body.

Particularly attractive are the unusual openwork zoomorphic handles, modelled in an archaistic Chinese manner and picked out in pale decoration. The broad shoulders, swelling bodies and spreading feet give the lamps an impressive architectural presence.

Each is raised on a fitted black ebonised wooden stand, providing a strong contrast to the warm ceramic body.

Mid-20th century, circa 1950–1970.

Unmarked.

The lamps have been professionally rewired for modern use.
