This signed and dated 1958 oil on panel depicts what we believe to be the gates of Hougoumont Farm, a key episode in the Battle of Waterloo. After some careful research, we identified the scene as the fortified farmstead that played a crucial role in the battle.

Hougoumont was attacked repeatedly by Napoleon’s forces but held firm, with the closing of its gates proving decisive. Wellington later described its defence as the critical point of the engagement.

The week of the battle began with the Duchess of Richmond’s famous ball in Brussels and ended with heavy losses among the young aristocracy, leaving a lasting mark on British society. This painting offers a thoughtful reflection on that moment in history.
