A wonderfully unusual mid-century ceramic relief wall panel, dating to circa 1960–1970.
The striking composition depicts a highly stylised warrior or guardsman carrying a long spear, formed from individually moulded white ceramic elements mounted in relief against a rich crimson woven ground.
The figure is particularly sculptural, with geometric armour, an exaggerated helmet and wonderfully textured decoration created through repeated impressed circular motifs. The separate ceramic components give the piece an almost collage-like quality and create considerable depth and shadow when viewed from the side.
Presented in its original-style simple teak-toned wooden frame, the combination of white ceramic, deep red textile and warm timber is particularly evocative of European post-war design.
The maker is currently unidentified, although the piece has strong Continental European Mid-Century Modern influences.
