Late 19th Century Thonet Bentwood Café Chair

Model No. 21 (Attributed)

A late 19th century bentwood café chair attributed to the Thonet workshops, most consistent with Model No. 21, retaining remnants of the original paper label beneath the seat.

The surviving shield-form label fragment appears to show “No 21” above partially legible lettering consistent with “Thonet”, supporting the attribution. The form, construction and proportions closely align with documented examples of Thonet’s Model 21 produced circa 1890–1910.

Crafted from steam-bent beech, the chair features gently splayed uprights, a curved top rail, three turned spindle supports and a traditional ring stretcher. The circular seat retains its original pressed decorative motif — a detail typical of early Viennese production.

The timber has developed a beautifully time-softened patina, with honest wear across the top rail and seat consistent with decades of café use.

An iconic and versatile piece — ideal as a desk chair, occasional chair or styled within a country house or Alpine interior.
