A highly unusual and decorative late 19th century Anglo-Japanese oak writing desk of exceptional architectural form, retaining its original aesthetic movement character throughout.
Raised on elegant turned and block supports united by finely shaped stretchers, the desk displays a wonderfully balanced silhouette with pierced corner brackets, geometric detailing and beautifully carved drawer fronts inspired by Moorish and Gothic revival design.
The superstructure incorporates four small drawers above the main writing surface, while two long frieze drawers below provide further practical storage. The drawers retain attractive brass handles and escutcheons, and the interiors show well-crafted hand-cut dovetail joints.
The desk is finished with an inset black leather writing surface with delicate gilt tooling, providing a striking contrast against the warm oak tones and rich figuring of the timber.
A particularly versatile size, ideal for use as a writing desk, library desk, hall desk or decorative occasional piece. Its compact proportions and strong architectural presence make it especially appealing for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
An exceptionally decorative and increasingly sought-after example of late Victorian Aesthetic Movement furniture.
