A handsome and characterful late 17th-century oak coffer, the front richly carved with scrolling foliate decoration and centred with the initials M S above the carved date 1684.
The panelled front is further decorated with small geometric inlaid lozenges, adding a particularly attractive decorative detail, while the long hinged top opens to reveal a generous storage interior. The coffer stands on stile feet and retains the wonderfully deep, time-worn colour and patina associated with early oak furniture.
A substantial and decorative piece, ideal at the end of a bed, in a hallway or drawing room, and equally useful as a blanket chest, storage piece or low console.

Condition:
Good antique condition consistent with its considerable age. There is expected surface wear, marking, scratching, colour variation and historic wear throughout, particularly to the top. There are signs of old repairs, alterations and restoration commensurate with a piece of this period.
