A striking oversized mid-century carved monkey pod serving platter in the form of a stylised fish, dating from the mid to late 20th century.
Hand-carved from a substantial single section of richly toned monkey pod wood, the platter has a wonderfully sculptural organic form with deeply hollowed serving wells and beautifully flowing lines throughout. The underside is decorated with carved fish-scale detailing, adding further texture and visual interest.
Originally intended as a dramatic banquet or serving piece, it now works equally well as a sculptural centrepiece, console display or decorative object within both contemporary and mid-century interiors. The rich patina, darkened finish and visible hand-carved character give the piece a warm tactile quality typical of tropical modern design from the period.
Its particularly impressive scale makes it far less common than the smaller examples usually encountered.
