A wonderfully decorative large antique Channel Islands brass bachin bowl, of impressive scale and traditional circular form.
The generously proportioned bowl has a deep basin with a broad flattened rim, ornamented with a simple repeating punched decoration. The brass interior has a lovely mellow golden tone, contrasting beautifully with the much darker, naturally aged exterior.
Traditionally associated with the Channel Islands, bachins were practical domestic vessels used for a variety of household purposes. Today, their wonderfully simple form and hand-worked character make them particularly appealing decorative pieces.
At an impressive 48 cm diameter, this example has real presence and would make a superb centrepiece on a large dining or kitchen table, either displayed alone or filled with fruit, flowers or seasonal foliage.
A second, smaller Channel Islands bachin bowl is also available separately.
Condition:
In good antique condition with wear commensurate with age and historic use. The brass displays an attractive aged patina with surface marks, scratches, small knocks and irregularities. The exterior has developed a particularly dark aged surface with areas of rubbing and tonal variation. The interior retains a warm golden colour with evidence of historic use.
The existing patina has been retained rather than over-polished.
