A wonderfully characterful large antique hand-carved wooden dough bowl, dating to the 19th century.

Hewn from a substantial single piece of wood, the bowl has a deep oval form with integral projecting handles and a beautifully worn, time-softened surface. Generations of use have created a rich patina, with numerous historic knife marks, scratches, staining, shrinkage cracks and old repairs adding to its distinctly primitive character.

Originally a practical domestic vessel, most likely used in the preparation of bread or other foodstuffs, it now makes a striking and highly decorative object. Its generous scale makes it particularly effective as a centrepiece on a large dining table, kitchen island or console, either displayed alone or filled with seasonal fruit, flowers or collected objects.

A genuine piece of vernacular craftsmanship with wonderful sculptural presence and an evocative, well-used surface.
