John Piper’s “Late Summer Flowers” is a signed etching with aquatint, numbered 47/70 in pencil. Printed by Kelpra Studio and published by Marlborough Fine Art, London in 1989, this piece exemplifies Piper’s skillful use of color and texture.
John Egerton Christmas Piper CH (1903–1992) was a celebrated English painter, printmaker, and designer. Known for his depictions of the British landscape, particularly churches and monuments, his body of work also included stained-glass windows, opera and theatre sets, tapestries, book jackets, and ceramics. Educated at Epsom College, he furthered his training at the Richmond School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. While he initially explored abstraction, Piper’s later work embraced a naturalistic yet distinctly expressive style.
During World War II, Piper served as an official war artist, gaining recognition for his powerful renderings of bomb-damaged churches, including Coventry Cathedral. His artistic contributions are held in numerous public collections. He collaborated extensively with poets John Betjeman and Geoffrey Grigson on the Shell Guides, as well as with potter Geoffrey Eastop and artist Ben Nicholson. In his later years, Piper produced many sought-after limited-edition prints, including this striking floral composition.
