Hinks & Son Birmingham Brass Rise-and-Fall Hanging Oil Lamp

A striking and highly decorative late Victorian hanging oil lamp by Hinks & Son of Birmingham, dating from circa 1900 and later professionally converted for electric use.

This impressive example retains its original brass reservoir, Hinks burner assembly, wick mechanism and rise-and-fall hanging system. The design is distinguished by three beautifully cast ram’s head supports, each finely detailed and flowing into elegant scrolling arms that support the original gallery. The lamp retains its rich aged brass patina, which complements its period character wonderfully.

Originally designed as an oil lamp, it has been sympathetically rewired for modern use while preserving the original Hinks burner and decorative fittings. The lamp is suspended from its original rise-and-fall mechanism, allowing the height to be adjusted in the traditional manner.

The lamp is fitted with a handmade opaline glass shade. There is a crack to the neck of the shade, however it is largely concealed when the lamp is assembled and hanging, and does not detract from its overall decorative impact.

An exceptional and increasingly scarce example of Victorian lighting by one of Britain’s most respected lamp manufacturers. Equally suited to a period hallway, stairwell, dining room, kitchen or country house interior.

- Height: 106 cm
