An original English Anglepoise desk lamp by Herbert Terry & Sons, designed by British automotive engineer George Carwardine.
This is the classic Model 1227, identifiable by its three-spring counterbalance mechanism, articulated steel arms and distinctive stepped square base. The two-tier base was introduced to the 1227 in 1938, replacing the earlier three-tier version, while the adjustable capped springs are also characteristic of the later 1227. 
Finished in black, the lamp retains a wonderful utilitarian character, with a broad metal shade, substantial weighted base and highly adjustable articulated arm allowing the light to be positioned at a variety of heights and angles.
The original mechanism is clearly marked “THE ANGLEPOISE – PAT. IN U.K. AND ABROAD”, providing a particularly attractive detail and confirming it as a genuine period Anglepoise.
The Anglepoise was developed by George Carwardine from his innovative constant-tension spring mechanism, with Herbert Terry & Sons producing the first lamps in the early 1930s. The three-spring Model 1227 followed in 1935 and became one of the defining pieces of 20th-century British industrial design. 
Condition: 
Good vintage condition with age-related wear, marks and patination to the painted and metal surfaces, entirely consistent with its age and industrial origins. Please refer to photographs for full condition.
