Giovanni Cappelletti’s striking bronze sculpture of a buck and doe, set on a red marble base, is an exceptional example of his mastery in animal representation. The piece captures the anatomy, spirit, and connection of the animals with remarkable realism and sensitivity. Cappelletti’s detailed chiseling and patina work are reminiscent of the renowned French “animalier” sculptors like Bonheur, Barye, and Mene.

This original fourth casting was produced by the Antonio Frilli Foundry and Art Studio in Florence, Italy. It was commissioned from the sculptor and purchased by the family of the present owner in 1968. The sculpture is signed and bears the foundry’s name, as shown in the accompanying images.

Born in Città di Castello, Perugia, in 1889, Cappelletti studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence under Libero Andreotti. Throughout his career, he collaborated with prominent artists and specialized in animal sculptures and fountain subjects. From 1939 to 1964, he worked with the Fonderia Artistica Ferdinando Marinelli as a sculptor and mold modeler. Cappelletti passed away in Florence in 1964.
