A charming English stoneware flagon with a classic two-tone finish, featuring a rich treacle-glazed shoulder over a pale buff stoneware body.
Slightly smaller in scale, this example has particularly pleasing proportions, with a gently tapering neck, shaped pouring lip and sturdy applied handle. The softly worn impressed maker’s mark to the shoulder identifies it as a piece by Shorter & Son of Stoke-on-Trent.
Originally produced as utilitarian storage ware for liquids such as ale or spirits, it now works beautifully as a decorative piece — ideal on a kitchen shelf, styled as a vase, or used to hold utensils.
