An engaging early C19th pencil portrait depicting a gentleman in late Georgian or early Victorian dress, presented in a period gilt frame with an attractive, time-softened patina. The drawing dates to around 1838 and retains a handwritten identification label to the reverse reading “W. M. Milner / Nun Appleton.” Based on this inscription and subsequent research, the sitter is identified as Sir William Mordaunt Edward Milner (1820–1867).
The portrait is sensitively handled, with confident pencil shading and careful attention to facial expression, characteristic of early Victorian portrait draughtsmanship. Executed in graphite on paper, it remains in good antique condition, with gentle age toning commensurate with its age. The original gilt frame shows honest wear and surface rubbing, adding to the authenticity and character of the piece.
