An antique bronze version of Durham Cathedral’s iconic sanctuary knocker, depicting a medieval figure clutching the ring in a plea for refuge. This evocative design harks back to a time when fugitives could claim 37 days of sanctuary by grasping the cathedral’s great door knocker, where waiting monks would usher them in to spare them from the pursuit of the “Hue and Cry,” the early form of law enforcement.
The figure is shown with a sword at his side, rich in detail and full of character, with natural weathering to the bronze giving it a lovely aged patina, and stamped beneath the feet is ‘Sanctuary’.
