Donald Hamilton Fraser’s “Study of the Hebrides” is a striking mixed media original, showcasing his signature style of layering thick, vibrant paint with a palette knife to create a textured, collage-like effect. The landscape remains recognizable, yet abstract, with dreamlike fields of color. The piece has remained in the same family since its purchase from the Bohun Gallery in 1992.
Donald Hamilton Fraser RA (1929–2009) was awarded a French government scholarship in 1953, leading to his first solo exhibition at Gimpel Fils, London. His career included numerous exhibitions across London, Zurich, and New York, including at the Paul Rosenberg Gallery.
A dedicated educator, Fraser taught at the Royal College of Art from 1958 to 1983, mentoring notable artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield. His contributions to the art world earned him the title of Royal Academician in 1985, alongside roles as an Honorary Curator and Trustee of the Royal Academy of Arts. Additionally, he served on the Royal Fine Art Commission and supported the Artists’ General Benevolent Fund.
