Donald Hamilton Fraser’s “The Temple of Apollo, Corinth” is a striking mixed media original, crafted in his signature style of layering thick, bright paint with a palette knife to create a textured, collage-like effect. While the landscape remains identifiable, it transforms into an abstract, dream-like composition through the vivid, almost ethereal fields of color. This particular piece has remained with the same family since its purchase in 1985. In 1988, Christie’s Contemporary Art requested permission to use the painting for silkscreen prints for further sales, but this was declined, making this artwork believed to be the only one in these specific colors ever created by the artist.

Donald Hamilton Fraser RA (1929–2009) was awarded a French government scholarship in 1953, leading to his first solo exhibition at Gimpel Fils in London. Over his career, he held numerous exhibitions, including at the Paul Rosenberg Gallery in New York. Fraser also taught at the Royal College of Art from 1958 to 1983, mentoring prominent artists like David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield.

He was elected a Royal Academician (RA) in 1985, serving in various esteemed positions at the Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal Fine Art Commission. His influence extended into the world of charity and the arts, and he was a passionate supporter of the Artists’ General Benevolent Fund.
