A substantial and highly decorative carved oak table lamp base of architectural form, centred by a bold heraldic shield and surrounded by deeply carved scrollwork.
This impressive example is attributed to Sir Charles Clee (CSI, CIE), a British civil servant known, according to accompanying material, to have produced carved wooden pieces throughout his life. The design and quality of carving are consistent with this narrative, combining a finely turned column with extensive hand-carved detailing, including stylised foliage and geometric motifs.
Of notably larger scale, this is a piece with real presence — ideal for a side table, console, or hall setting where it can act as a focal point. The overall effect is sculptural and architectural, with a strong decorative impact.
The oak has developed a rich, warm tone with a beautifully figured grain and an attractive aged patina that enhances the depth and character of the carving.
