A superb antique primitive elm stool, hand-crafted in the late Georgian or early 19th century using traditional pegged and wedged mortise and tenon construction.
The thick solid elm seat has developed an exceptional deep honey-brown patina through generations of use. The surface is wonderfully tactile, displaying centuries of honest wear including historic tool marks, knife cuts, natural shrinkage and softened edges that give the piece tremendous warmth and authenticity.
Each leg passes through the seat and is secured with original hardwood wedges, a traditional method of construction that remains both beautiful and structurally strong. The elegant splayed legs are united by stretchers, providing excellent stability while enhancing the stool’s simple architectural form.
Originally made as a milking or low work stool, it now makes a striking decorative accent. Ideal as a small side table, plant stand, sculpture plinth, fireside stool or simply displayed as an example of early vernacular craftsmanship.
Its restrained form and remarkable patina allow it to sit equally comfortably in a country house, contemporary interior or wabi-sabi inspired setting.
