A wonderfully sculptural antique primitive elm milking bench, handcrafted in England during the late Georgian period using traditional vernacular methods.
Fashioned from a single thick plank of beautifully figured elm, the seat displays a gentle natural bow together with an exceptional surface worn silky smooth through generations of daily use. Deep grain, historic shrinkage, old tool marks and countless traces of its working life combine to create an extraordinary patina that simply cannot be replicated.
The seat is secured by four through-tenons, each locked with original hardwood wedges. Historic hand-forged nail repairs and an early butterfly repair demonstrate the care taken to preserve the stool during its working life, adding authenticity and immense character.
The elegantly splayed legs are united by shaped stretchers, giving the piece excellent stability while retaining its light, architectural appearance. Originally made as a milking or dairy stool, it now works beautifully as a decorative accent, side table, fireside stool, plant stand or display plinth.
A superb example of English vernacular craftsmanship with remarkable honesty and presence.
