A decorative Chinese export lacquered cabinet, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.

Constructed from warm, honey-toned softwood, the cabinet features eight inset black lacquer panels decorated with gilt and polychrome figural scenes above and birds and floral motifs below. A central run of four drawers provides practical storage and pleasing symmetry.

Fan-shaped cartouches with calligraphic motifs, traditionally associated with good fortune, add an additional layer of detail.

Produced in southern China for the Western market during a period when chinoiserie furnishings were highly fashionable, this is a versatile and characterful piece. Ideal as a statement storage cabinet, bar cupboard or dining room piece, offering generous storage and a beautifully ordered presence within the home.

Liberty's used to retail a few pieces similar in size and construction.
