A handsome mahogany banjo-shaped aneroid barometer and thermometer dating to circa 1925, retaining its original silvered barometer dial and dual-scale Fahrenheit and Centigrade thermometer.
Crafted in the classic Georgian Revival style, the elegant mahogany case features a moulded cornice, architectural silhouette and generous circular barometer with the traditional weather indications of Stormy, Rain, Change, Fair and Very Dry. The original thermometer remains housed within the upper section, making this an attractive and practical decorative instrument.
Adding greatly to its interest is the original engraved brass presentation plaque, which reads:
“Presented to Mr J. Gosden by his Fellow Workmen, Netherne, April 1925.”
This charming inscription provides a fascinating glimpse into the barometer’s history and suggests it was presented as a retirement or long-service gift by colleagues at Netherne Hospital, Surrey.
The mahogany case has developed a rich, warm patina with only light age-related wear, while the dial and glass remain in good condition. As with all antique scientific instruments, it is offered primarily as a decorative piece, and the accuracy of the readings cannot be guaranteed.
