This highly decorative set of four mid-century prints is based on James Seymour’s original works from 1755, engraved by the Irish artist Richard Hawston. The prints depict celebrated racehorses of the era, including Old Partner, Childers — renowned as the fleetest horse at Newmarket — Crab the grey racehorse, and White Nose.
James Seymour (1702–1752) was one of Britain’s earliest sporting artists, known for his detailed racehorse portraits and hunting scenes. Born to a wealthy banker, goldsmith, and amateur artist, Seymour developed his skills by studying paintings and prints from his father’s collection. Despite lacking formal training, he gained significant recognition, with many of his works engraved in the 1740s and 1750s. His notable patrons included Sir William Jolliffe and the 6th Duke of Somerset, though a disagreement with the latter left a commission at Petworth House unfinished.
