A striking and highly collectible mid-century ceramic sculpture by M. Obican (1913–1994), signed and dated 1951. Obican is celebrated internationally for his folk-art style and expressive use of colour; early hand-built ceramics such as this are scarce and sought after.
The figure depicts a rider seated on an abstracted animal, modelled in Obican’s distinctive naïve style. The flowing glazes in turquoise, cobalt, lemon and apple green give the piece a wonderful luminosity and movement. A strong example of early European studio pottery and a superb decorative artwork in its own right.
