A C19th fireside open armchair, probably continental, with a superbly carved top rail. The rail is carved in the Black Forest style (originating in the Swiss Alps), and consists of a central daisy flower, surrounded by forget-me- knots and arabesques that cascade downwards. This kind of decoration was called the Rites of Spring. The bottom rail is decorated with a tulip as its central motif and sweeping acanthus leaves leading to each leg.
