A characterful 19th century hand-forged iron coal shovel, now appreciated as a sculptural decorative piece.

The shovel retains its original forged iron head, with a beautifully shaped blade and visible central ridge, characteristic of traditional blacksmith-made tools. The form has a strong, almost architectural quality, with elegant proportions and a subtle twist through the shaft.

The handle is a later replacement, added during its working life. It remains solid and well-suited to the piece, and allows it to be easily displayed or wall-mounted.

The iron surface carries a rich, natural patina with deep tones of charcoal, burnt umber and soft rust, developed over many years of use. This gives the piece warmth and depth, making it particularly effective in interior settings.

At over 1.3 metres tall, it has real presence, ideal for a country house kitchen, boot room, or as part of a curated wall of antique and primitive objects.

An honest and characterful piece with strong decorative appeal.

Condition:

Good antique condition with expected wear consistent with age and use.

Surface wear, oxidisation and markings throughout, all contributing to its character. Structurally sound.
