Part of a C17th Spanish Oak Altar Piece, 'Souls in Purgatory.'

 

The figures reach out with their hands to attract patreons attention as a cautionary tale. It has two brackets on the back and was probably once on a stand. It may have stood in a monastery or church. An unusual and unique piece.

 

Purgatory scenes were particularly beloved in southern Europe from the C16th-C18th. There is a similar scene at the 'Capela Xeral de Animas' in Compostella outside the main entrance to the church
