The word tole refers to painted tinplate. Tole painting sprang from the folk art of decorative painting on metal and wooden objects and furniture across Europe from as early as the seventeenth century. Toleware developed in the 19th and 20th centuries to refer to metal objet painted with enamel or lacquer.
